Welcome to 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Whittier!

What Sets Us Apart?

At our academy, we're not just teaching martial arts; we're crafting a dedicated approach to Coaching & learning that is driven by innovation and effectiveness.

Are you tired of doing mindless repetition and unenthusiastic warm ups, that have no connection to actual Grappling?

Our focus is an ecological dynamic approach to learning, where we blend the most effective grappling arts: Wrestling, Judo, and Jiu Jitsu.

Ecological Dynamics - What is it?

Scary words right? Lets break it down. If you were to Google Ecological Dynamics, the following would be presented:

“a multi-disciplinary framework that adopts concepts and tools of dynamical system theory, ecological psychology and complex system in neurobiology to investigate and model the relationships that emerge in extreme sports between athletes and their environment.”

This approach signals the need for sports Coaches & practitioners to utilize the constraints-led, task based, and non-linear reciprocity between the athlete (Grappler), the task, and the environment (training/competition).

We embrace that “searching is learning”, & that the struggle is necessary. There are countless case study exemplars, from applied practice in high-performance sports organizations, to illustrate how these contemporary perspectives are shaping the work of sports practitioners (sport ecology designers) in practice and in performance preparations. Join us as we set out to explore how these original ideas from Davids et al. (1994) and Handford et al. (1997) have been advanced through the theoretical lens of ecological dynamics.

Traditional Approach:

Route repetition of a movement pattern - to perfect that pattern.

  • Cannot be de contextualized - you are only learning to be effective in this very specific context

  • Repeat same thing over and over - no allowance for creative interruption

  • Lack of organizational learning - overshadowed by an overwhelming amount of instruction/details

  • Suggests it is the movement itself that is the magic*

Ecological Approach:

  • Task based - an outcome we want

  • Allowing the body to organize around the most efficient way to achieve the desired outcome

  • Creating the outcome, not the movement

  • The outcome is the goal, how you get there is variable

  • Suggest how we go about solving the problem is the magic*

Innovative Techniques:

You'll explore a dynamic range of techniques that draw from the strengths of wrestling, the finesse of judo, and the intricacies of Jiu Jitsu. This fusion allows our students to excel in various grappling scenarios, adapting to different opponents and situations.

Head Coach - Mike Wilson

My name is Mike Wilson, I’m a 1st-degree 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, with over 15 years experience navigating the world of Jiu Jitsu and MMA. Teaching has been my path for over a decade now, and I'm thrilled to share that I'll be leading 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Whittier.

My journey began in 2008, under the guidance of Master Marcelo Perdomo and Master Murilo Bustamante at Brazilian Top Team. Progressing through the ranks from White to Brown Belt in the Gi in 5 years time, I sought to deepen my understanding of the martial arts landscape. This quest led me to joining 10th Planet Costa Mesa in 2015, where I immersed myself in the realm of MMA under Casey Halstead's tutelage, my mentor & Coach to numerous elite UFC athletes.

In 2016, I made the move to Las Vegas, fully dedicating myself to training under Coach Casey full time. I took on the role of Head Coach at 10th Planet Downtown Las Vegas, where I had the privilege of guiding exceptional talents from UFC, Bellator, and ONE FC.

My journey has intertwined with remarkable individuals, including Joe Benevidez, Lance Palmer, Natan Levy, Tim Elliot, Ben Saunders, Ashlee Evans-Smith, and a host of other top-tier UFC athletes. Through my experiences in their fight camps and corners, I've gained invaluable insights that has shaped my approach to coaching.

In 2019, the honor of earning my Black Belt arrived, marking the pinnacle of my journey. After over a decade of testing my skills across various disciplines - Gi, NoGi, and MMA - at every belt level, constantly seeking growth and refinement, the time came for me to return to Whittier to open my own academy. In 2020 we were delayed by the Pandemic, however in true martial art’s spirit we persevered and patiently awaited the right time to open our academy. That moment finally arrived when after years of setbacks, we officially opened on April 2, 2023, accomplishing a life long goal.

Currently, I am on the path to earning my Judo Black Belt under the guidance of Justin Flores, coach of Team USA Judo for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. My weekly training regimen includes sessions at Blackhouse MMA under Coach Kenny Johnson, and regular visits to 10th Planet HQ, under the guidance of Master Eddie Bravo.

Join me as we embark on a journey of learning and growth in the art of grappling and martial arts at 10th Planet Whittier!

Black Belt Coach - Wes Levine

Hello grapplers,

My journey has taken me across the globe, competing and coaching in diverse locations around the US & the globe such as, French Polynesia, and Mexico.

Having tested my skills at every belt level, from the humble white to the coveted black, I've graced prestigious platforms like WSOF, Fight to Win, Subversiv, and numerous professional grappling events, each experience contributing to my growth as a practitioner and a Coach.

The dawn of the day sees me at the helm of the 6am program at 10th Planet Whittier, a responsibility I hold with immense pride. Teaching the next generation is an honor I cherish deeply within my Jiu Jitsu journey, believing that dedication and hard work can surmount any challenge. My commitment rests in uncovering the true potential within each of our students.
